<p>Jermaine Defoe bags in 5 goals as <a title="Tottenham Hotspurs Football" href="http://kodeexii.net/tag/tottenhamhotspurs" target="_self">Tottenham Hotspur</a> went on a 9 goal fest over Wigan in the Barclays Premier League match yesterday. A total of 10 goals were scored and 9 of them in the second half. A preview of the things to come in upcoming Spurs matches?</p>
<p>Looking at the total number of goals scored, you would think that some of it were scored in the first half. That is simply not the case. Spurs started off strong. Peter Crouch played a pivotal role in the first few Tottenham attempts at goal. His goal, however, came only after missing the target in two earlier attempts. In the eighth minute, Aaron Lennon sent in an early low cross into the box to find Crouch stooping low to guide the ball into the net.</p>
<p>The revitalized Spurs side, wearing their <a title="Tottenham Hotspur Jersey" href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21?_encoding=UTF8&#038;node=2" target="_blank">White Tottenham Home Kit</a>, continued to pressure the Wigan defense. Wigan&#8217;s goal tender Chris Kirkland had his work cut out for him. Leftback Erik Edman and Center back Titus Bramble were clearly having problems containing the Spurs frontmen and Aaron Lennon. Wigan had Kirkland and the woodwork to thank for keeping them very much alive in the first half as the scoreline stood at 1 &#8211; 0 at the interval.</p>
<p>The second half proved to be an incredible 45 minutes for Spurs. Nobody would have expected what was to transpire in that 45 minutes of football. <a href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/historymadeinincrediblewin221109.html" target="_blank" title="<br />
History made in incredible win">Tottenham delivered a performance that will be remembered</a> in the <a title="Premier League Goal Fest" href="http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~1883111,00.html" target="_blank">history of the Premier League</a>.</p>
<div id="attachment_1672" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-defoe-vs-wigan-2009.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-1666" title="Tottenham's Defoe Celebrates Goal vs Wigan"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-1672" title="Tottenham's Defoe Celebrates Goal vs Wigan" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-defoe-vs-wigan-2009-150x150.jpg" alt="Tottenham's Defoe Celebrates Goal vs Wigan" width="150" height="150" /></a><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21">Buy Tottenham Gifts</a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham&#39;s Defoe Celebrates Goal vs Wigan</p></div>
<p>5 minutes into the half, Wigan found themselves 2 goals down. Defoe&#8217;s first for the night came from Lennon&#8217;s cross from the right. In an almost similar fashion to the first goal, Lennon worked his way on the right past Edman and sent in a superb cross into the box.  Defoe rushed in towards the ball and whizzed past his marker to meet the ball with a half volley straight into the top of the net. Kirkland could do nothing as he watched the ball sail over him into goal.</p>
<p>Two minutes later, Defoe capitalized on a mistake by Wigan&#8217;s Emmerson Boyce. Boyce slipped as he tried to intercept a Wilson Palacios pass from midfield. As he slipped, the on rushing Defoe was left clear on the ball with only Kirkland in front at the goal. The in-form striker was not about to waste this chance and he cleanly slotted the ball pass a hapless Kirkland from a tight angle for his second. Barely 7 minutes into the half Spurs were 3 goals ahead.</p>
<p>Defoe would go on to score three more goals to complete his tally of five for the night. Just one short of becoming the first player to score a double hatrick in a single match. His five goals in the game also puts him in the record books as the third player to achieve such a feat in the Premier League. He is, however, the first player to score five in just one half of a match. Yes, I know. It&#8217;s remarkable.</p>
<div id="attachment_1674" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-lennon-vs-wigan-2009.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-1666" title="Tottenham's Aaron Lennon vs Wigan 2009"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-1674" title="Tottenham's Aaron Lennon vs Wigan 2009" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-lennon-vs-wigan-2009-150x150.jpg" alt="Tottenham's Aaron Lennon vs Wigan 2009" width="150" height="150" /></a><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21">Buy Tottenham Jerseys</a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham&#39;s Aaron Lennon vs Wigan 2009</p></div>
<p>Aaron Lennon proved that Spurs are indeed a different team when he is around. After being the provider for three of the four Tottenham goals, he scored one himself. Crouch held the ball superbly at the top of the box with Wigan defenders all around him. Finding no where to go, he slid the ball to the right where Lennon was all alone with no markers. On the run, Lennon let out a low shot to the far right of the Wigan goal for his first goal and Spurs&#8217; fifth.</p>
<p>Two more goals each from David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar completed Tottenham&#8217;s  route of Wigan.</p>
<p>The win showcases the influence Aaron Lennon has on Tottenham. With Lennon and Kranjcar performing at the right and left, Tottenham&#8217;s attack is more potent and dangerous. Both of them like to take on defenders and are good at it too. Defenders will have their wor cut out to cover the two. As a result, the two strikers wil have a little bit more space for themselves.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been a while since I last saw Tottenham play as they did against Wigan. If they can produce the same briliance in the remaining of the season, I believe a top three if not top two finish is possible. Consistency will be the key. If they can be consistent, then we&#8217;ll get to see them perhaps challenging for the title, instead of just top four placement.</p>
<p>Come On You Spurs!</p>

<description><![CDATA[Tottenham Hotspurs edge Sunderland 2 - 0 despite an under performance. Spurs was clearly the second best team in the match. He even saved a penalty kick by Darren Bent. A truly outstanding goalkeeping display from Gomes ensured Tottenham&#8217;s 2 &#8211; 0 clean sheet against Sunderland.</p>
<p>Tottenham, sporting their <a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21/detail/B002IRGCL4" title="Buy Tottenham Hotspur Home Shirt 2009/10">White Tottenham Home Kit</a>, needed a win after coming off two straight losses. The team, however, did not play really well. Despite playing at home, it was Sunderland who seemed more comfortable with the ball. Spurs was just not in tune with themselves. With Peter Crouch starting, they opted for the usual highball for Crouchy to nod down to someone.</p>
<h2>Keane Connects With Crouchy</h2>
<p><div id="attachment_1601" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-keane-vs-sunderland.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-1600" title="Tottenham&#039;s Robbie Keane Celebrates"><img src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-keane-vs-sunderland-150x150.jpg" alt="Tottenham&#039;s Robbie Keane Celebrates" title="Tottenham&#039;s Robbie Keane Celebrates" width="150" height="150" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-1601" /></a><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21" title="Best Price Tottenham Kits" target="_blank">Buy Tottenham Gifts</a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham's Robbie Keane Celebrates</p></div>Ten minutes into the game, Spurs took their lead in one of their forays into the Sunderland box. Benoit Assou-Ekotto sent in a highball to Crouch. This time Crouch connected and nodded the ball down towards goal. Robbie Keane, rushed onto the ball to tap it in. His first tap ricochet off Sunderland&#8217;s Craig Gordon&#8217;s hands. The ball fell into Keane&#8217;s path for him to finish off with another tap into the net for his eighth goal of the season.</p>
<p>The goal did nothing to change the momentum of the game. It can clearly be seen that Spurs lack direction at midfield. Jermain Jennas did make a few attempts to carry the ball forward. He showed that he has good ball control. However, when it matters, he failed to make that pass to the open strikers. He just don&#8217;t have the vision.</p>
<p>Sunderland was clearly the better team in the first half. Andy Reid, was unlucky that his long range attempt hit the post with Gomes clearly beaten by the strike. Apart from that one strike, Gomes proved to be the one solid wall preventing Sunderland from scoring. Even when his defenders failed him.</p>
<p>Vedran Corluka, sent a weak header back to Gomes which was intercepted by an onrushing Keiran Richardson. Richardson was clear on goal. Thankfully, Gomes was quick to come off his line and prevented Richardson from scoring. </p>
<p>The second half didn&#8217;t fare any better. The fans booing at the interval had no effect on the team. They were clearly at a lost in terms of creativity. It&#8217;s really amazing to see Sunderland still down by a goal. They have thus far been the better team in the match. </p>
<h2>Along Came Kranjcar</h2>
<p>Niko Kranjcar&#8217;s entry in the match changed the match. Spurs now have an extra man in midfield. Tottenham began to play better football. They gained more control of the ball. Instead of just laying the ball up for Crouch, they are now moving up from the flanks and sending in crosses into the Sunderland goal area. Spurs are playing better football.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_1602" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-defoe-vs-sunderland.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-1600" title="Tottenham&#039;s Jermain Defoe vs Sunderland"><img src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tottenham-defoe-vs-sunderland-150x150.jpg" alt="Tottenham&#039;s Jermain Defoe vs Sunderland" title="Tottenham&#039;s Jermain Defoe vs Sunderland" width="150" height="150" class="size-thumbnail wp-image-1602" /></a><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21?_encoding=UTF8&#038;node=2" title="Best Price Tottenham Jerseys" target="_blank">Buy Tottenham Jerseys</a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham's Jermain Defoe vs Sunderland</p></div>In the 68th minute, Jermaine Defoe proved that he can also be a provider. Controlling the ball at the top right corner of the penalty box, Defoe screened the ball past two defenders and sent a sweet lay up to an onrushing Tom Huddlestone. From the edge of the box, Huddlestone met with Defoe&#8217;s lay up to send a scorching thunderbolt past Martin Fulop&#8217;s reach straight at the top post and into the net.</p>
<p>It probably was not Sunderland&#8217;s day. They were pretty much in control of the match for the most part of the game. They had more goal scoring chances. They even had a penalty awarded to them. They just couldn&#8217;t beat Gomes.</p>
<p>Darren Bent was awarded a penalty in the second half. Although replays showed that he seemed to have fallen even before Gomes touched him. Bent himself took the spot kick. Truthfully, it was not a really good kick. The ex Spurs, delivered a weak low kick to the left of the goal. Gomes guessed right and palmed the ball away. He didn&#8217;t even have to stretch for it.</p>
<h2>Top Four For How Long?</h2>
<p><a href="http://www.premierleague.com/page/LeagueTables/0,,12306,00.html" title="Barclays Premier League Table" target="_blank">Tottenham is now fourth in the table</a> with 22 points. 3 points behind Arsenal and United at 25 points. Arsenal has one match in hand. Chelsea sits pretty at the top of the league with 30 points after beating United 1 &#8211; 0 at Stamford Bridge. Aston Villa is one point behind Spurs as they routed Bolton 5 -1 at home.</p>
<p>The upcoming International break is certainly a welcome break for the team. It should provide some time for Spurs to regroup and recollect themselves as a team. Harry should really do something to beef up the current lack of vision in midfield. </p>
<p>The absence of Luca Modric and Aaron Lennon can clearly be seen. Keane is certainly not up to filling up his role as a wide attacking midfield. He is much better of sitting up top. Yes, he did score. However, apart from that, he barely made any impact. </p>
<p>Kranjca should be given more playing time. He certainly made enough impact to turn the momentum for Spurs. What about Pavlyuchenko? Lets see a little bit more of the two. Don&#8217;t you think that Kranjca deserves more playing time?</p>
<p>Can Spurs maintain their stay in the top four if they continue to play like this? Come On You Spurs!</p>

Arsenal secured a comfortable 3 &#8211; 0 victory against the visiting Tottenham who pretty much did nothing through out the 90 minutes of football. Should Spurs really want to end the season at the top four, they will really have to shed that &#8220;Lazy Football&#8221; mentality which they put on last night.</p>
<p>What is &#8220;Lazy Football&#8221;? That&#8217;s what I deemed appropriate to describe how Spurs played against the Gunners last night. All they did the entire match was pass the ball around lazily. Once a while they would send a highball towards P.Crouch. Crouch would then jump up high and nod the ball down hoping the likes of Robie Keane would be around to control it.</p>
<p>How many attempts did they make at the Gunner&#8217;s goal? Probably just a handful. If my recollection is correct, I&#8217;d say Almunia was only tested once. Bentley&#8217;s freekick which went directly to Almunia and he tipped it over for a fruitless corner.</p>
<p>Harry Redknapp&#8217;s team clearly had no clue what they wanted to do in the match. Nobody had the courage nor desire to attack the Arsenal defense straight up. It&#8217;s as if all they were told to do in the match is to just pass the ball around at midfield.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s pretty obvious that Spurs rely on the creative juices of Aaron Lennon and Luca Modric. Both are not available last night. It&#8217;s really sad that a team like Spurs have only two players they could rely on to mastermind their engine room.</p>
<p>The saddest point for Spurs fans last night was probably during the second goal. The way the entire team just shutdown is truly shocking. That to me is the epitome of what I call &#8220;Lazy Football&#8221;. </p>
<p>Spurs have now played 7 matches without Modric. They&#8217;ve lost four and drawn one. In all four of those losses, Lennon was also either unproductive or not playing. Harry really need to have another Lennon or Modric on the team.</p>
<p>Harry should also look into Spurs defense. All three Arsenal goals came from very slack defending. It&#8217;s utterly shocking to see Tottenham defense allowing Fabregas to roll them around to score Arsenal&#8217;s second goal. </p>
<p>For reasons unknown to me, the entire Tottenham team was just totally out of it last night. <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1224373/GARY-LINEKER-Harry-Redknapp-big-job-transform-Spurs.html" target="_blank">Harry needs to do something</a> about this if he wants to see the Spurs make a challenge for the top four spots.</p>
<p>Spurs have now lost two back to back league games. Their next Premier League match will be against Sunderland at home. Can Spurs turn things around? Can they stop having to rely on Aaron Lennon and Luca Modric to create chances at goal? Will someone step up and take over the role played by Lennon and Modric?</p>
<p>Come On You Spurs!</p>

<p>Tottenham Hotspurs kept up with the<a href="http://premierleague.co.uk/" target="_blank"> Barclays Premier League</a> leaders with another away win against Portsmouth. The 1 &#8211; 2 away win puts them at third spot with 19 points after 9 games. 3 points behind leader Manchester United and 2 points behind second spot Chelsea.</p>
<p>The <a title="Portsmouth 1 - 2 Tottenham" href="http://www.premierleague.com/page/MatchReports/0,,12306~47742,00.html" target="_blank">trip to Pompey</a> was H. Redknapp&#8217;s first visit after leaving Portsmouth. Along with the likes of J.Defoe and P.Crouch, who also made their first return trip to Fratton Park after their short stint there.</p>
<p>Two goals in the first half secured Spurs the win. Ledley King, coming off his injury, headed in the first goal. A. Lennon&#8217;s hard work on the right side gave Spurs a corner just before the 30 minute mark. Tottenham&#8217;s new signing N. Kranjcar floated in a highball. L. King majestically rose above every one else to nod the ball home past an indecisive D. James.</p>
<div id="attachment_1437" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 160px"><a href="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/tottenham-defoe-celebrates-vs-portsmouth.png" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-1434" title="Photo taken from Barclays Premier League Site"><img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-1437" title="Photo taken from Barclays Premier League Site" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/tottenham-defoe-celebrates-vs-portsmouth-150x150.png" alt="Tottenham Defoe Celebrates vs Portsmouth" width="150" height="150" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham Defoe Celebrates vs Portsmouth</p></div>
<p>Minutes later, J. Jenas made short work of the Pompey defense as he combined with Tom Huddlestone just outside the penalty box. J. Jenas then squared a low shot into the box. J. Defoe made sure that he managed to touch the ball with his toe to put Spurs in front by two goals.</p>
<p>Portsmouth came back more lively in the second half. Former Tottenham, K.P. Boateng cut the deficit with a strong volley from the left that finally beat a seemingly unbeatable H. Gomes.</p>
<p>The Spurs keeper, basically single handedly kept Spurs from losing the 3 points they had. If not for the heroics of H. Gomes, Spurs would have probably lost their 2 goal cushion. It was indeed a night of superb goal tending by Gomes. Even when it seemed like the ball would go in after he was wrong footed by a diverted attempt at goal. Gomes somehow managed to get a hand to swipe the ball away from goal.</p>
<p><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21"><img class="size-full wp-image-1447 alignright" title="Buy Tottenham Kits from the Tottenham Hotspur Shop" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/tottenham-kits-2009.png" alt="Tottenham Kits 2009/2010" width="150" height="150" /></a>J. Defoe saw red in the second half after stumbling down with Pompey&#8217;s A. Mokoena. An act which <a href="http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~1829992,00.html">he has apologized</a> for doing. A purely worthless act which could have costs Spurs the three points they were hanging on to.</p>
<p>Spurs is certainly putting on a strong challenge for the title, so far, this season. They have been able to find it in them to win games even when they are missing their playmaker L. Modric. If the team continues to play this way, then a top four finish is certainly within their reach.</p>
<h2>Come On You Spurs!</h2>

<description><![CDATA[Tottenham Hotspurs failed to keep their winning streak going. Spurs went down 1 - 3 to Manchester United in a thrilling match late Saturday. In preparing for their upcoming game against Chelsea, it would be wise for Spurs to learn from this defeat. Thus, I've identified 7 areas of weakness in the match against United. Improve on these, and Tottenham will certainly be among the top 4 at the end of this season. <a href="http://kodeexii.net/tottenham-hotspurs-vs-manchester-united-2009.html">Continue reading <span class="meta-nav">&#8594;</span></a>]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Tottenham&#8217;s winning streak was cut short by Manchester United. United came back from a goal down to win 1 &#8211; 3 at White Hart Lane. The best thing Harry Redknapp can do after the loss should be to study and learn from the match. Go through the match video with the team and identify their areas of shortcomings in the match.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">I&#8217;ve just watched the match again on ESPN. Following are my 7 reasons why Tottenham crashed against United.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">1. 4-3-3 Formation</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Why? Why? Why did Harry put up a 4-3-3 formation against the likes of Manchester United? Especially with Modric in the crock list. Palacios, Lennon and Huddlestone was clearly outmatched against the likes of Fletcher, Anderson, Scholes and Giggs in midfield.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">MU had the numbers and the talents to take control of the midfield. As such, Tottenham spent a major part of the match defending. Lacking midfield coverage, defensive clearances go straight back to United players.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">2. Aaron Lennon</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Lennon is probably one of the most nimble players in the league. He has been running circles around defenders since the start of the season. However, Evra managed to keep him quiet for the most part of the game.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Against Evra, Lennon faced a left back who can match his speed and footwork. They both possesses similar playing traits which cancels out each other.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Harry should have noticed this. I suppose he did. If so, why didn&#8217;t he tell Lennon to switch to the left side more often? Maybe he did. Perhaps Lennon did not play to Harry&#8217;s instruction?</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">3. Possession</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Through out the earlier 4 matches, Tottenham enjoyed most of the possession time. They had control of the ball. They passed the ball around, waited and created the openings for the strikers to score.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t get our game going, we didn&#8217;t get our passing going and as a consequence they got back into the game. They are a top, top team and punished us.&#8221; &#8211; Spurs Assistant Boss, Kevin Bond -</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">In the match against United, Tottenham had little possession of the ball. Whenever they had possession, they would give it away cheaply at midfield. Many a times, Spurs relied on long passes from the defense. These deep passes often go wasted as Tottenham players were nowhere to be found in United&#8217;s half.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Had they been more patient with the ball and kept possession, they would&#8217;ve been able to frustrate United a little bit. However, it was Spurs who grew frustrated as they had little possession. When frustration creeps in, mistakes happen. Against a team like Manchester United, mistakes are certainly costly.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">4. Substitution</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Anyone have any idea to why Pavlyuchenko was left on the bench? Especially on a day when the strikers clearly failed to make full use of the chances presented? Did Corluka suffer an injury?</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">United was certainly not pressing forward a lot after Scholes&#8217; sending off. Evra spent more time making sure Lennon was quiet. Rarely did he venture forward to trouble Corluka. Why was he substituted?</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">I feel sorry for Hutton. That&#8217;s twice now he has been involved in Tottenham&#8217;s moments of defensive confusion which lead to a goal. Last week, he was involved in the blunder in defense where Lee Bowyer scored the equalizer for Birmingham. This time around, he was again involved in the confusion which Rooney took full advantage of with his goal. Wrong place at the wrong time? Where was King anyway?</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">5. Midfield Creativity, The Missing Link</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Spurs is certainly missing Modric&#8217;s creativity and defense splitting passes at midfield. The situation was made worse with Lennon being kept quiet by Evra. Keane, assigned to the Modric role, was clearly not up to it.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Palacios and Huddlestone are not known for their creativity. Jenas did bring back some punch into the Spurs engine room. However, his presence only spurred just a little creativity back into the team. It was not enough to break United&#8217;s wall of defense. Yes, United did go into defensive mode after Scholes saw red.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">6. Two Steps Behind</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Is it only me? Do any of you noticed that Spurs players seemed to be two steps behind United&#8217;s? Through out most of the match, United seemed to win tackles and getting to the ball ahead of Tottenham&#8217;s players. Were United simply faster and more alert?</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t seem to be able to get close to them. If you let them play they will always hurt you and that&#8217;s what happened.&#8221; &#8211; Tottenham striker, Peter Crouch -</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Tottenham players, for the most part of the match seemed to be in a daze. On many occassions, they were ball watching. It&#8217;s among the reason why United enjoyed more possession time. They were winning the ball more often than Spurs.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">7. United&#8217;s Winning Wherewithall</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Time and time again, United showed they have the wherewithall of champions. This they showed so many times against Spurs. How many times have United comeback from behind to win against Spurs? Too many.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">No matter how many goals Spurs are up in front, United have always shown that they can comeback and win the game. Tottenham should take to learning about the mindset of United&#8217;s players. If Spurs want to really challenge for the top 4 spot, then they will need to instill the top 4 mindset into the players.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Skills and talent wise, there is not much different between Manchester and Tottenham. Thus, the only differentiating factor is the players&#8217; mindset. To become champions, they must have a champion&#8217;s mindset. At the moment, that&#8217;s probably the one thing lacking in Tottenham&#8217;s players.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">I am pretty sure Harry has already identified the team&#8217;s shortcomings. They need to be worked on before Tottenham&#8217;s next match. Up next for Spurs is another top four opponent. Chelsea is Tottenham&#8217;s next opponent. Spurs will be traveling to Stamford Bridge to go against the current league leader.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste" style="position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;">Chelsea is one of the two remaining team with a 100% winning record so far in the league. This match will be another difficult test for Harry&#8217;s boys. Do you think Spurs will turn the table against Chelsea?</div>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1167" title="Tottenham Striker Defoe Overhead Kick Goal" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/tottenham-defoe-overhead-kick.png" alt="Tottenham Striker Defoe Overhead Kick Goal" width="232" height="373" />Tottenham&#8217;s winning streak was cut short by Manchester United. United came back from a goal down to win 1 &#8211; 3 at White Hart Lane. The best thing Harry Redknapp can do after the loss should be to study and learn from the match. Go through the match video with the team and identify their areas of shortcomings in the match.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve just watched the match again on ESPN. Following are my <strong>7 reasons why Tottenham crashed against United</strong>.</p>
<h2>1. 4-3-3 Formation Leaving Spurs Wide Open</h2>
<p>Why? Why? Why did Harry put up a 4-3-3 formation against the likes of Manchester United? Especially with Modric in the crock list. Palacios, Lennon and Huddlestone were clearly outmatched against the likes of Fletcher, Anderson, Scholes and Giggs in midfield.</p>
<p>With only three <a title="Buy Tottenham White Home Shirt" href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21/detail/B002IRGCL4" target="_blank">Tottenham White Shirts</a> manning the midfield, Tottenham looked and was indeed too open for Manchester United. MU had the numbers and the talents to take control of the midfield. As such, Tottenham spent a major part of the match defending. Lacking midfield coverage, defensive clearances go straight back to United players. As such, the ball keep on coming back to haunt Spurs defenders.</p>
<h2>2. Aaron Lennon Kept On A Leash</h2>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1168" title="Tottenham Lennon Against United Evra" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/tottenham-lennon-vs-evra-271x300.png" alt="Tottenham Lennon Against United Evra" width="271" height="300" />Lennon is probably one of the most nimble players in the league. He has been running circles around defenders since the start of the season. However, Evra managed to keep him quiet for the most part of the game.</p>
<p>Against Evra, Lennon faced a left back who can match his speed and footwork. They both possesses similar playing traits which cancels out each other.</p>

<h2>3. Minute Possession</h2>
<p>Through out the earlier 4 matches, Tottenham enjoyed most of the possession time. They had control of the ball. They passed the ball around, waited and created the openings for the strikers to score.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t get our game going, we didn&#8217;t get our passing going and as a consequence they got back into the game. They are a top, top team and punished us.&#8221;</p>
<p>- <a title="Kevin Bond Quote From Tottenham Website" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/threeandout130909.html" target="_blank">Spurs Assistant Boss, Kevin Bond</a> -</p></blockquote>
<p>In the match against United, Tottenham had little possession of the ball. Whenever they had possession, they would give it away cheaply at midfield. Many a times, Spurs relied on long passes from the defense. These deep passes often go wasted as Tottenham players were nowhere to be found in United&#8217;s half.</p>

<p>Tottenham Hotspurs continue their winning ways in the <a title="Barclays Premier League Official Site" href="http://www.premierleague.com" target="_blank">Barclays Premier League</a> 09/10. Thanks to a last minute goal in time added on from Tottenham&#8217;s speedy winger Aaron Lennon. Glory Glory Tottenham!</p>
<p>Wearing <a title="Tottenham Hotspur Home Shirt" href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21/detail/B002IRGCL4" target="_blank">Tottenham&#8217;s white home kit</a>, Spurs took control of the match from the get go. They were camped in Birmingham&#8217;s half of the field for the most part of the first half. Chance after chance was created. However, the two Spurs front men, <a title="Tottenham Player Jermaine Defoe Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/jermaindefoe.html" target="_blank">Jermaine Defoe </a>and <a title="Tottenham Player Robbie Keane Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/robbiekeane.html" target="_blank">Robbie Keane</a>, failed to convert any of them.</p>
<h2>Chances Were Plenty For Tottenham</h2>
<p>The first half saw Spurs missing at least 5 &#8211; 6 clear cut chances to score. Even  Lennon too had his shot blocked off the line by Steve Carr, an ex Tottenham defender. Try as they might, they just could not find the net.</p>
<p>Defoe probably had the best chance to score. Huddlestone sent him a wonderful defense splitting pass deep from within Spur&#8217;s half. Defoe found himself in a one on one situation with Birmingham&#8217;s keeper. However, with only the keeper to beat, Defoe failed to get his name on the score sheet. His attempt went inches wide with the keeper well beaten.</p>
<h2>Birmingham&#8217;s Defense Stood Their Ground</h2>
<p>As Tottenham took control of ball possession, Birmingham resorted to a full team defensive mode. They had 10 men behind the ball at all time. Spurs had to resort to a more patient style of play. They passed the ball around midfield. <a title="Tottenham Luka Modric Player Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/lukamodric.html" target="_blank">Luka Modric</a>, <a title="Tottenham Player Tom Huddlestone Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/tomhuddlestone.html" target="_blank">Tom Huddlestone</a>, <a title="Tottenham Player Aaron Lennon Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/aaronlennon.html" target="_blank">Aaron Lennon</a> and <a title="Tottenham Player Wilson Palacios Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/wilsonpalacios.html" target="_blank">Wilson Palacios</a> had the midfield area totally under their control.</p>
<p>Birmingham seldom made advances towards the Spurs&#8217; goal. They, however, did create a couple of scoring chances as well. Larsson missed his best chance of the half when his strike went inches wide of the post as he broke free into Spurs&#8217; box.</p>
<h2>Two Injuries For Tottenham Within Minutes.</h2>
<p>The first half ended with no goals from either team. In the second half, both teams started where they left off. Spurs continued to control the midfield as their stout 4 man midfield roamed free.</p>
<p>Tottenham suffered two setbacks in a spate of a few minutes, as both <a title="Tottenham Player Ledley King Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/ledleyking.html" target="_blank">Ledley King</a> and Luka Modric had to be substituted in the early stages of the second half. With Modric and King out of the match, Birmingham started to gain control of midfield. Modric&#8217;s absence was certainly missed in midfield.</p>
<h2>Tottenham &#8216;s Newly Signed Aerial Threat</h2>
<div id="attachment_1132" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px"><img class="size-medium wp-image-1132" title="Tottenham Defoe Flying Kick" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/tottenham-defoe-flying-kick-300x192.png" alt="Tottenham's Defoe Spectacular Kick" width="300" height="192" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham&#39;s Defoe Spectacular Kick</p></div>
<p>Tottenham continued to pile in pressure on Birmingham&#8217;s defense. <a title="Tottenham Player Transfers" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/players_transfers.html" target="_blank">Spur&#8217;s new signing</a>, <a title="Tottenham Player Peter Crouch Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/petercrouch.html" target="_blank">Peter Crouch</a> came in for L. Modric. Crouch added a new threat for Birmingham&#8217;s defenders. With Crouch now in play, Spurs took more to the air and took advantage of Crouch&#8217;s aerial prowess.</p>
<p>Crouch had three looks at goal from the air. Two of which was cleared off the line. Another header was sent crashing on the top bar. Peter Crouch proved his worth on his fourth attempt. Off a Huddlestone free kick, Crouch rose majestically at the far post to nod the ball into Birmingham&#8217;s goal. His first goal for Tottenham putting Spurs one up against Birmingham.</p>
<h2>Birmingham&#8217;s Resolve Frustrates Tottenham</h2>
<p>Th goal somehow raised Birmingham&#8217;s resolve to take at least a point back from White Hart Lane. They opened up their game and started pushing forward into Spurs territory. Their change in tactics caught the Spurs defense and midfield by surprise.</p>
<p>Tottenham defense was in disarray for a few minutes as they tried to adjust to Birmingham&#8217;s sudden change in tactics. Birmingham took full advantage of the Spurs disarray. In a confusion between Alan Hutton who came in for Ledley King and Carlo Cudicini, both players stumbled as they committed themselves for the ball in the penalty box.</p>
<p>As both Hutton and Cudicini stumbled to the ground, the ball fell directly at the feet of Birmingham&#8217;s Lee Bowyer. Bowyer had no problems, whatsoever, to guide the ball straight into Spur&#8217;s empty net.</p>
<p>At 1-1, Birmingham defense once again stood their ground. They mustered a solid defense which frustrated Tottenham&#8217;s strike force.</p>
<h2>Tottenham&#8217;s Newly Found Winning Attitude</h2>
<p>As the match began to reach full time, Tottenham&#8217;s players continued to pile in wave after wave of attacks. This is really a new attitude which can clearly be seen in the new Tottenham outfit under Harry Redknapp. The old Tottenham would have been totally demoralized after the mistake that gave Birmingham their equalizer.</p>
<p>This new Tottenham, however, didn&#8217;t seem fazed nor were they demoralized after Bowyer&#8217;s goal.  Instead, they kept their patience and continued pushing for that winning goal. Their patience and positive attitude paid off brilliantly for them.</p>
<p>Deep into time added on, with less than a minute to play, Birmingham&#8217;s S. Carr slipped with Huddlestone on his heels at midfield. Huddlestone then played the ball to <a title="Tottenham Player Roman Pavlyuchenko Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/first_team/romanpavlyuchenko.html" target="_blank">Roman Pavlyuchenko</a> who sprinted forward and squared the ball into the path of an on rushing Aaron Lennon.</p>
<p>Lennon then came face to face with two Birmingham defenders. He twisted and turned.  As he got in to the penalty box, Lennon managed turned inside and brought the ball on to his favorite right foot. He also found himself a small shooting lane and fired home a thunderous low shot that went past Hart&#8217;s outreached hands and straight into the bottom left corner for Tottenham&#8217;s winning goal.</p>
<h2>Can Spurs Sustain This Winning Form?</h2>
<p>Tottenham have collected full 12 points since the start of the season. Four wins out of four matches so far. This is certainly their best start since a long time. The question now &#8211; Does Tottenham have the wherewithal to continue this winning form?</p>
<p><a title="Tottenham Fixtures And Results" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/matches/matches_frr.html" target="_blank">Tottenham&#8217;s next match</a> will be the first ultimate test for the team. They are up against Manchester United in White Hart Lane. The Birmingham match have cost them two influential players in the likes of Luka Modric and Ledley King.</p>
<div id="attachment_1052" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21/detail/B002IRK6HK"><img class="size-full wp-image-1052 " title="tottenham-gifts-home-shirt-2009-2010" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/tottenham-gifts-home-shirt-2009-2010.jpg" alt="Tottenham Gifts. Home Shirt 09/10" width="200" height="200" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Tottenham Hotspurs Shop. Home Shirt 09/10</p></div>
<p>Both were sorely missed in the game against Birmingham in the second half. Defense was slightly in disarray. This led to the confusion in defence which ended with Birmingham&#8217;s equalizer. In the midfield, Modric&#8217;s creativity was lost when he was substituted. Birmingham managed to gain control of the midfield after Modric went off.</p>
<p>With <a title="Tottenham Player Luka Modric Out With A Broken Fibula" href="http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~1782605,00.html" target="_blank">Modric out for months</a> after the Lee Bowyer incident with Birmingham, Spurs will be needing another creative midfielder to take his place. The current group of <a title="Tottenham First Team Profile" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/players/player_profiles.html" target="_blank">Tottenham players</a>, certainly lacks Modric&#8217;s cutting edge creativity in creating and opening up chances for the team.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not that they are not good. They certainly have proven their worth for the team. However, to really be in the race for the title, a player with the foresight and creativity like Modric is certainly required.</p>
<p>Redknapp have about two weeks to prepare for the match against United. I&#8217;m pretty sure he will have a few surprises up his sleeves. Let&#8217;s all just enjoy this excellent form the team is in at the moment.</p>

<p>TottenhamHotspurs win against West Ham last night ensures they stay at the top of the table. Spurs fans will certainly enjoy their stay at the top for a while. This, after Tottenham continue their fine run in the Barclays Premier League.</p>
<p>Last night&#8217;s win gave Spurs their full 9 points out of a possible 9. They&#8217;ve also achieved a club record by winning all three of their starting season matches. The last time they did so was in the 1960 &#8211; 61 season.</p>
<p>Last night&#8217;s <a title="West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur - as it happened" href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/aug/23/west-ham-tottenham-hotspur-live" target="_blank">WestHam vs TottenhamHotspurs</a> saw no goals scored in the first half. Both teams played it out with vigor. However, neither teams took full advantage of the chances they created at goal.</p>
<p>The second half started no differently. Both teams saw their attempts at goal foiled by poor finishing and great defensive measures.</p>
<p><strong>Carlton Cole&#8217;s Thunderbolt Goal</strong></p>
<p>Hammer&#8217;s Carlton Cole, however, delighted the home fans in the 55th minute. From 30 yards out, Cole, with his back to the Spurs goal, chested the ball down and swiftly made a turn before unleashing a powerful volley straight into the goal. Carlo Cudicini was left stranded on his goal line. He could only muster to raise is arms and watched the ball stream past him into goal.</p>
<p>A truly amazing goal from Carlton Cole. It will certainly make the list of great goals for the 2009-2010 season.</p>
<p><strong>Cole&#8217;s Hero To Zero Bizarre Moment</strong></p>
<p>As amazing as his goal was, 5 minutes later, Cole did something totally bizarre. Receiving the ball at midfield, Cole suddenly made a backpass to the Hammer&#8217;s goal. No Tottenham players were even near him. Only he knows why he made the pass.</p>
<p>The pass went directly to the feet of Jermaine Defoe who was coming out of the West Ham penalty box. It was as if Carlton Cole was sending Defoe a gift. Delightfully, Jermaine Defoe accepted the gift. He turned with the ball and gleefully slammed in his shot pass Robert Green.</p>
<p>Defoe probably screamed &#8220;Thank You Cole!!!&#8221; as he rifled his shot into goal. <a title="50 Up for JD" href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/50upforjd230809.html" target="_blank">Defoe scored his 50th goal as a TottenhamHotspurs player</a>. It&#8217;s also his fourth goal of the season after netting three against Hull earlier midweek.</p>
<p><strong>Aaron Lennon Curled One In As Spector Slipped</strong></p>
<p>Spurs then went ahead in the 80th minute. Aaron Lennon started on the right hand side of the field from midfield. He played the ball to Corluka who tried to squeeze the ball pass West Ham&#8217;s Jonathan Spector.</p>
<p>Spector managed to cut off the pass for a bit. He somehow slipped and Lennon was there to continue with the ball in the penalty area. Lennon then opened up some space for himself and let fly a curling left-footed drive past the outstretched hands of Robert Green.</p>
<p>TottenhamHotspurs, in the end earned their full three points after a hard fought away match. Carlton Cole went down after the whistle. He probably couldn&#8217;t figure out himself why he sent that utterly bizarre pass to Jermaine Defoe.</p>
<p><strong>The Goals</strong></p>
<p>[media id=7 width=425 height=344]</p>
<p><strong>Harry Should Be Pleased</strong></p>
<p><a title="Harry Redknapp was pleased with the way we responded to going behind." href="http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/ladspasscharactertest230809.html" target="_blank">Harry Redknapp is certainly proud of his boys</a>. They certainly showed their patience and resolve to come back from behind in a match where they had problems breaking down a stout West Ham defence. The Hammers, for the most part of the game, defended in numbers. They had 9 men behind the ball at all times.</p>
<div id="attachment_1052" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 210px"><a href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21/detail/B002IRGCL4"><img class="size-full wp-image-1052 " title="tottenham-gifts-home-shirt-2009-2010" src="http://kodeexii.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/tottenham-gifts-home-shirt-2009-2010.jpg" alt="Tottenham Gifts. <p><strong>Lets Just Enjoy The Feeling</strong></p>
<p>Being at the top of the league must surely be strange for the Spurs players and fans. It is still too early in the season to say that Spurs will be one of the top four teams this season. However, many pundits are thinking and discussing the possibility of this TottenhamHotspurs team challenging for the league title this season.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just leave the league title discussions to the experts. At the moment, lets allow the Tottenham players and us fans the benefit of enjoying this wonderful moments of being the Numero Uno in Barclay&#8217;s Premier League.</p>
<p>Oh yes.. How do you like the new <a title="Buy a Tottenham Kit from Tottenham Gifts Store" href="http://astore.amazon.co.uk/tottenham-gifts-21" target="_blank">Tottenham Hotspur Kit</a>? Fancy the yellow strip on the shirt?</p>
