Miami Hurricanes vs Notre Dame In The Sun Bowl

Miami Hurricanes vs Notre Dame in Sun BowlHow has your end of the 2010 been so far? For me, it’s been swell. Spurs are doing great in the Premier League. The Malaysian Football team have just brought home the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Today, another team which I am a fan of is also going into battle with a long lost rival. The Miami Hurricanes are going up against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today at the Sub Bowl. A prelude to the Miami – Notre Dame rivalry which will be reignited next season.

The Canes have not been doing too good this season. After a 7 – 5 season which saw Miami letting go of their coach Randy Shannon, the team would certainly want a win today so that they end the year on a positive note.

The U GearMiami will start the match with Jacory Harris at the centre. Harris, has been criticized a lot by fans this season. However, he is probably still the best QB Miami has at the moment. He certainly has the numbers on his side. With 50 career TDs to his name, he is the second best in the school’s history.

Why then are the Canes not getting the results to their liking?

Can the Canes end this season on a positive note? Will the players rise to the occasion and beat the crap out of the Fighting Irish like they did years ago in 1985? Perhaps not to that extent.

Go CANES! Make it a fabulous 2010!

Miami Hurricanes Can Finish 2010 With Pride

The Miami Hurricanes Football has got a chance to end the 2010 season with a positive note. 2010 has been a so and so season for the Hurricanes. To top it off, they lost to South Florida, and that resulted in the firing of head coach Randy Shannon.

The Canes, however, can turn all those negative news around if they can end the season by winning the Sun Bowl, come 31st December. Who are they up against? The Fighting Irish – Notre Dame. Will this be a prelude to another intense regular season rivalry that will be renewed in 2012?

[ad#Google Adsense-2]
The two teams have not met each other in regular season since 1990. Their match-ups back then have always been intense and highly rated. Back then, both teams were national championship contenders.

So intense was the rivalry, in 1988, they got into a pregame brawl in the tunnel. Both teams had at one time or another dashed the other’s championship hope. In that game, Notre Dame defeated Miami and emerged National Champions. This is after Miami totally humbled the Irish with a 24-0 defeat the previous year to end up winning the National Champion.

Let’s take a look at what flying around the net in reference to the Miami Hurricanes Football.

The New York Times: Notre Dame vs. Miami Is Back

For the first time since 1990, college football will see a game between Notre Dame and Miami. The Fighting Irish and the Hurricanes, both 7-5, accepted invitations Sunday to play in the Sun Bowl in El Paso on Dec. 31.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-5) vs. Miami Hurricanes (7-5). At the end of October, it didn’t look like Notre Dame would be playing in any bowl. Expectations for Miami were soaring in Randy Shannon’s fourth season, but an inexplicable loss at Virginia and an overtime home loss to South Florida were too much for university officials to ignore.

What’s your take? Will Miami Hurricanes end this season with respect? Will this match up reignite the intense rivalry of these two teams like the 80s?

Miami Hurricanes Category 5 Failure: Is Randy Shannon’s Coaching Career Done?

Football at the University of Miami is at a cross roads, going into the final game against USF the Hurricanes have turmoil swirling around the entire program. The Virginia Tech game seems to be the straw that broke the Camel’s back even though the Canes played well for most of the game, the fourth quarter left a bad taste in the mouth of a large number of fans.

Wow! Did I read it correctly? I thought I saw somewhere in the above sites, the new headcoach is bound to get a $3 million contract for three years? I think I might also send in my resume. Who knows, I just might get lucky.

I wonder how much the headcoach of any of our Malaysian Super League team gets for their effort in developing the team.

Welcome to the Hurricanes Football Weekly Issue #1. Yes! This is the first edition of this weekly posting on Miami Hurricanes Football. What is the Hurricanes Football Weekly?

It’s a weekly digest of 12 articles picked from around the Internet on Miami Hurricanes.

Canes look to stay on roll in Atlanta

.. A year later, Miami rolled at home. Fresh off a thrilling win at Florida State, the Canes welcomed the Yellow Jackets and returned the favor with 454 total yards against the Ramblin’ Wreck. However, the bigger story was a disciplined defense that held Tech to 95 rushing yards, throwing them completely off their game and putting ‘The U’ in the driver’s seat all night..

Game Ten : Miami 35, Georgia Tech 10

Miami brought their A game to the ATL on Saturday and rolled out with a convincing 35-10 win. Virginia Tech took down North Carolina, so next weekend’s match up with the Hokies isn’t do or die for the ACC crown, but it will be a great showdown between two of the conference’s best.

NCAA College Football Top 25 Teams – November 14th 2010

Canes beat Georgia Tech, 35-10

Miami trounced Georgia Tech in perhaps its most impressive win of the 2010 season on Saturday, 35-10. It was an all around solid effort by the Hurricanes, who appear to finally be gelling as a team.

How To Fix The Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes football program is broken. Long gone are the days of perennial top 5 rankings. Ushered in is an era of mediocrity, evidenced by their 28-25 divisional record since joining the ACC in 2004. After years of being told the program is headed in the right direction, 2010 serves as a step back.

Morris likely to make third start Saturday against Hokies

CORAL GABLES – It appears Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon won’t be forced to decide whether to start Jacory Harris or Stephen Morris in Saturday’s crucial game against Virginia Tech. Shannon said Sunday that the team is taking “baby steps” with Harris as he recovers from a concussion Oct. 30 at Virginia.

Miami Hurricanes: Meet Sebastian

Miami’s mascot has been the ibis since 1926, when Miami’s yearbook was named “The Ibis.” The first instance of Sebastian making an appearance at a Miami football game was 1958 when then-student John Stormont dressed up in a homemade ibis suit.

Miami’s Bowl Possibilities Still Unclear

This weekend’s games will go a long way in determining the ACC’s bowl landscape. With just two weeks to play in the regular season, the `Canes postseason outlook is about as wide open as the running lanes created by Miami’s offensive line Saturday in Atlanta. Miami’s 35-10 blowout win over Georgia Tech on Saturday secured the Hurricanes’ spot as the clear cut No. 2 team in the ACC Coastal Division behind Virginia Tech with two weeks left to play in the regular season.

The University of Miami football team moved back into both major college football polls on Sunday

The Hurricanes are ranked No. 21 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll. Miami (7-3, 5-2 ACC) is coming off a convincing 35-10 win at Georgia Tech on Saturday. The `Canes put up over 500 yards of offense for the second straight week, led by wide receiver Leonard Hankerson’s 132-yards receiving against the Yellow Jackets.

Miami stops the option and stifle the Yellow Jackets

Miami defeated the Yellow Jackets on Saturday in a 35-10 blowout on the road. The Hurricanes had 507 total yards on offense including 277 rushing yards. Freshmen quarterback Stephen Morris exceptional for the second straight week connecting on 10 of his 18 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown.

Miami Hurricanes pound Georgia Tech, keep ACC hopes alive

Four Miami running backs scored touchdowns, receiver Leonard Hankerson joined the party with three catches for 132 yards and another touchdown, and the Hurricanes amassed a season-high 507 yards to dominate the Yellow Jackets 35-10 Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Yes, the Miami Hurricanes are now ranked 21 in the coaches poll. They also lost to the Noles this year. Still, they are not out of the ACC title chase yet.

Hurricanes En Route To A 10 – 3 Season

Miami Hurricanes Jacory Harris vs Duke 2009

Miami Hurricanes Jacory Harris vs Duke 2009

The Miami Hurricanes are en route to a 10 – 3 season. Thanks to the win against Duke last weekend. They have also gone up in the BCS Standings and Polls. These are the Miami Hurricanes Football News that we all like to read about after the Canes’ terrible outing against North Carolina two weeks ago.

Miami defeated Duke 34 – 16 last weekend. After which, two players, Jacorry Harris and Darryl Sharpton earned ACC honors for their performance in that match.

Harris played well indeed, with an injured right thumb and all. He had 348 yards and two touchdowns in the match. He even threw for a career high 28 passes in the first half alone.

Sharpton also had an inspiring game. The linebacker returned an interception for a touchdown. A 73 yard interception return on his last home game.

Noteworthy highlight of the match, however, is the performance of Damien Berry.

Miami Hurricanes Damien Berry vs Duke 2009

Power running back Damien Berry stepped up to carry the ball 10 times on UM’s 15-play scoring drive to open the fourth quarter and capped it with a two-yard TD run. He ended the game with 76 yards on 16 carries. He even had the crowd chanting his name through out the third quarter and during that drive. Here is a player that probably should be given a little bit more playing time.

At the polls, Miami has risen up somewhat. In the AP poll, the Miami Hurricanes rose from No. 21 to No. 19. They also went up from No. 24 to No. 21 in the Coaches’ poll. The BCS Standings puts them at No. 17th from 20th. Miami is also ranked 14th in the nation by the BCS computers.

A 10 – 3 season is certainly possible for the Canes. Of course they will have to win all their remaining matches. No more bad outing in the likes of the North Caroline game. Miami is no longer in the race for any title this year. No National Championship. No ACC title. A bowl game is still in the cards, however. 10 – 3 is really not that bad. It’s an improvement over last year’s not so mediocre 7 – 6 season.

Next on the Miami Hurricane Football schedule is the University of South Florida. Miami travels to Tampa for the first time since 1974 to end the 2009 regular season schedule. This is just the second time the two teams meet. Miami will be playing for the first time at the Raymond James Stadium.

Ladies And Gentlemen, This Is Hurricane Football

Miami Fans at Hurricanes vs VirginiaBest Price Miami Hurricanes Gear

Miami Fans at Hurricanes vs Virginia

Miami Hurricanes Football came alive to trounce the Virginia Cavaliers 52 – 17 at the Landshark Stadium. After the Miami loss against Clemson and a weak defensive outing against Wake Forest in the past two weeks, Miami Hurricanes came out strong and firing on all guns. The offense, defense and the special teams. They all showed what true Hurricane Football is.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is Hurricane Football”

That’s what the game commentator said. It’s true. Check out Thearon Collier’s 60-yard punt return touchdown. That is one amazing return. At one point, Collier was all alone at the far left of the field. He was totally surrounded by at least 7 Cavaliers. He twisted and turned. Somehow, he managed to squeeze through and sprinted across the field to the right side. The other Hurricanes arrived to provide him cover and a number of crunching blocks just as he turned the corner. With protection on his side, Collier made quick stride into the end zone.

I’ve watched that play for an unknown number of times now. I still can’t fathom how he managed to escape from the 7 onrushing Cavaliers. Seriously, if you have yet to view it, go check it out right now. Play the following video.

[media id=21 width=600 height=337]

The defense that allowed 500+ yards just a week ago, stood their ground and only allowed Virginia 149 yards. The Cavaliers’ Marc Verica was pressured through out the day. He ended up just completing 11 of 29 passing for a total of 75 yards and an interception. They were like 0 for 10 in 3rd down conversions. Amazing.

Miami Hurricanes Laroyn Byrd vs Virginia 2009

Miami Hurricanes Laroyn Byrd vs Virginia 2009

Offensively, Miami was unstoppable. They amassed 515 yards in total. Miami’s Graig Cooper had a game of his life. He collected 152 yards rushing from 18 carries.

For some of the current Canes, the win is payback for the 48 – 0 defeat they suffered to Virginia in 2007. For them, it was sweet revenge. That truly humbling loss have haunted them for two long years.

The Canes didn’t really click in the first half. Two punt blocks kept Virginia close as both resulted in two touchdowns for the Cavaliers. The Canes clearly need to work on their punting special team. Had they not turn it up in the second half, that two TDs from the failed punts would have made it difficult for them.

After the big win, Miami is now second in ACC Coastal conference with a 4 – 2 record. Georgia Tech still sits confortably at the top of the table with a 6 – 1 record. The latest BCS standings has Miami at number 14. The Canes is at 12 in the AP Polls. The Coaches Poll puts them down at number 15.

Can the Canes continue to climb up the Polls? An ACC title seem far fetch now, unless Georgia Tech some how take a dive in one of their upcoming matches. If the Canes continue to perform as they did against Virginia, they can certainly expect to play in a Bowl game.

Lets hope that The U can consistently produce the same level of performance in their remaining matches. Go Canes!

Miami Hurricanes Squeeze By Wake Forest

The Miami Hurricanes Football Team traveled to Wake Forest and managed to squeeze a one point win over the Demon Deacons. Miami, coming off the surprise loss to Clemson last week, was made to work double hard for the one point win. The Hurricanes had to rally back from a 27 – 14 deficit in the fourth quarter.

Wake Forest gave it their all. Up until the fourth quarter, they had Miami in control. The Demon Deacons ended the match with 555 total yards. They harassed J.Harris and the Canes offense for much of the game.

Miami ended the match with 356 total yards. They have the fourth quarter to thank for a majority of those yard total. The offense basically did not click in the first three quarters.

At the end of the fourth, J.Harris threw the winning 13 yards TD pass to T.Benjamin. Wake Forest were down by one point at 28- 27. There was 1:08 minutes left on the game clock. McManus quickly drove the Demon Deacons across midfield. They get to set up a 60-yard field goal attempt from J.Newman. The kick, however, fell well short on the game’s final play.

Buy Miami Hurricanes Hooded Sweat Shirt[media id=17]

The win puts Miami at 3 – 2 in the ACC. The ACC title is still within grasp. They still need Georgia Tech to stumble at least one game, though. The Canes will really need to pull their act together.

A one point win against Wake Forest is not really going to help them at the polls.

Next, Miami will be looking at hosting Virginia. Another ACC team. The Hurricanes must win all their remaining matches if they want a shot at the ACC title. No two ways about it.

The U is certainly not 100% back yet. They are coming back..

Go Canes!

Spurs, Canes, Fins and the Red Giants. They all went down.

It’s the weekend already. I’m still trying to grasp the events that happened last weekend. It’s truly an amazing weekend. All the teams I support suffered losses last weekend. Miami Hurricanes, Miami Dolphins, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Selangor Red Giants. They all lost in their respective matches.

The Miami Hurricanes Football Team

My favorite college football team, the Miami Hurricanes suffered their second loss of the season. The thing is, the Canes lost to an unranked team who is also in the ACC. The loss to Clemson means that Miami is no longer in the driving seat of the ACC title. Miami needs both Georgia Tech and Virginia to lose another game each to stand a chance at the ACC title.

[media id=14]

The loss has lowered the Hurricanes rankings in the polls and the BCS standings. Last week, the Canes were in the top 10. This week, Miami is 18th in both the AP and Coaches Polls. The BCS standings have the Canes at 19th.

Let’s see if the Canes come bouncing back from this unthinkable defeat to Clemson. Up next this weekend for the Canes is Wake Forest. With so many people in the crock’s list, can the Miami Hurricanes make a come back to their winning ways.

Go Canes!

Miami Dolphins Football

In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins suffered a setback after performing admirably in two earlier matches. After back to back wins against the Bills and the Jets, the Dolphins could not continue their winning momentum against the Saints last week.

The Saints managed to come back from a 24 – 3 deficit in the first half to end the game with a 46 – 34 win. The Fins are now 2 -4 in the NFL. Dolphins, however are still 2 – 0 in the AFC East Division.

This weekend, Miami travels to New York for a meeting with the Jets. The last time the two teams met at the Land Shark Stadium, Dolphins came out victorious. The Jets have since been making waves in the NFL after that loss. They are now the NFL’s top-ranked rushing attack.

Can Miami stop the Jets in their rushing game? Will the Wildcats match the Jets rushing prowess?

Go Fins!

Tottenham Hotspurs Soccer

Tottenham Hotspurs have been able to keep up with the Premier League leaders so far. After 10 matches played, they are now perched at the fourth spot with 19 points. However, Spurs too suffered another loss last weekend.

Tottenham played host to Stoke at White Hartlane. They could not take advantage of their homeground as they went down  0 – 1 to Stoke. Spurs had total control of the match but somehow failed to find the net. Stoke took full advantage of Aaron Lennon’s injury at the end of the second half. With Spurs playing with only 10 men, Stoke took charge and created a couple of chances. One of them they converted into their winning goal.

Spurs, however, seemed to have recovered from the loss in the midweek. They sent Everton out of the Carling Cup with an inspired  win on Tuesday.

This week, tonight to be exact, Tottenham travels to Arsenal. A win against Arsenal is certainly plausible, looking at both team’s performances this season. Arsenal, though still formidable have shown that their defense is penetrable. Should Aaron Lennon be fit to play tonight, he will probably be the one Spurs must rely on to break the Gunner’s defence.

Come On You Spurs!

Selangor Red Giants

.

.

In the local scene, the Selangor Red Giants failed to advance into the next stage of the Malaysia Cup. They went down to Terengganu after Terengganu keeper saved a penalty. Both teams drew 1 – 1 after regulation time.

With Selangor out of the Malaysia Cup, both finalists from last year are now out of the tournament. Selangor’s dream of capturing all the trophies did not materialize. This season Selangor have bagged three trophies – Charity Shield, FA Cup and the Super League. Only the Malaysia Cup escaped their grasp.

Selangor’s 2009 season is over. They collected three titles this season. Next season, the fans will expect even more. Will the Red Giants be able to deliver?

Go Selangor!

The Malaysian Super League looked to have revamped their website. Yes, it’s been a while since I last checked the site. The FAM website looks new too. However, both sites still lack content. What’s the point of paying some company for a new website if nobody maintains the content. Why can’t they just outsource the content creation part?

It’s sad that the Malaysia soccer is not getting coverage – online and offline. Perhaps we bloggers can do something about this next season. Let’s join forces and setup a special blog that covers all the games in the TM Super League. Any takers?

Miami Hurricanes Football Team Ranked 10th in BCS Standings

Initial BCS Standings - Miami #10The Miami Hurricanes Football Team visited Central Florida during the weekend. They came back with another inspiring win. The 27 – 7 win also puts them back in the Top Ten of the BCS. The initial BCS standings have Miami at number 10.

The Canes are now 5 -1. The last time they achieved such a feat was in 2005. Miami is also now back in contention for the ACC title as Virginia Tech fell in the hands of Georgia Tech. Miami, Georgia Tech and V. Tech are now 2 – 1 in the ACC. As long as Miami wins all their upcoming conference matches, they have the ACC title within reach. The Hurricanes will be facing 5 ACC opponents in their upcoming matches, starting with Clemson (3 – 3, 2 – 2).

The Miami Defense showed true grit once again. In the third quarter, at the UM 2, the banged up Miami D held strong to prevent UCF from scoring. In the third play of the drive,

Safety Jared Campbell blitz through the left side of UCF’s line and hit Hodges throwing arm as he let the ball go. Linebacker Colin McCarthy intercepted the floater in stride and returned it to the UM 19.

Banged-up Miami Hurricanes’ defense shines in win

Nobody would have even dreamed that Miami would be where they are at the beginning of the season. Coming from a 7 – 6 season, to be looking at a possible ACC championship title. As a matter of fact, they may even be looking at the BCS Championship game.

A long shot it may be, but if things fall the right way for them, the long shot might just materialize. The 2009 college football season have so far been a bit topsy turvy. We’ve seen top ranked teams go down surprisingly to lower ranked opponents. As such, with half the season still to go, the Miami Hurricanes can certainly dream for the BCS Championship berth.

Buy Your Basic Miami Hurricanes Gear From The Miami Hurricanes Online Store[media id=13]

Coach Shannon has a lot of work to do if he wants to see this Miami team challenge for the BCS. Once again, Miami has had to rely on their Defense to turn the match momentum for them. The Miami special team needs to get their act together. They have been very loose through out the season. Against UCF, the special team put the Defense in a very tight spot at the UM 2, when they botched up a snap over the head of punter, Matt Bosher.

Miami offensive line needs to provide better protection for their QB Jacory Harris. Against UCF, he was sacked for 6 times. He was rushed through out the match. It was simply amazing that he managed to avoid from throwing any interception. Some would probably say that Jacory Harris opted to take the sacks rather than throw interceptions.

Miami now have control over their destiny. They have to win all their remaining matches. If they can do that, the ACC title will be within their grasps. A BCS Championship would certainly be a dream come true for the team. As every one knows, dreams do come true..

Lets all supporters of the Miami Hurricanes put on some Miami Hurricanes Gear and bring the noise down to Miami’s home turf this coming weekend.

The Miami Hurricanes Football Team Bags Another Convincing Win Over Unranked FAMU

Miami Hurricanes kicker in action against FAMUThe Miami Hurricanes Football Team secured another convincing win. Miami played host to Florida A&M in Land Shark Stadium, the Canes (4 – 1) pulled of an outstanding performance which resulted in a 48 – 16 scoreline.

The U is back? The scoreline certainly seemed to indicate it. The Miami first team played for only one half of the match. The Orange and Green men had developed a 31 – 3 lead at half time. With the game already out of reach for FAMU, Miami sent in their second line after the break.

This FAMU match can be considered as a breather for the Miami Hurricanes Football Team. After playing four straight games against highly ranked opponents, the team could certainly use a relaxing match to cool off. At least that’s what everyone thought the Hurricanes would do.

Instead of playing it loosely, the Miami first team totally rolled over Florida A&M. They ran and passed to their hearts content. Jacory Harris were intercepted twice in the first half. Still, they managed to get 31 points on the scoreboard.

The win puts Miami standings currently at 4 – 1. The Canes are now ranked at number 9 in the Associate Press Polls. Back into the Top Ten after dropping out with the loss to Virginia Tech.

Up next for Miami is Central Florida, next weekend. After going through very tough season opening games against Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma, the resurgent Miami has a less torrid schedule ahead of them. Even so, they will be going up against highly respectable teams like Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and South Florida.

Miami still has a chance at the National Championship title. All they need to do is win the ACC title for a shot at the National title. Really, no one besides the Hurricanes players themselves know if they are National Championship material. If the players think they want the National Champion title this year, it is there for them to take.

To many observers, This young team is still too young. Many are saying that Miami will present a more realistic National Champion challenge next year.

Do you think the Canes can do it this year? Go Canes!
