Good for Average User, Not So for a Computer Geek…
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
FIRST IMPRESSIONS, THE POSITIVES:
I love the shiny looking black with silver on the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000. Right out of the box, I could see the USB connector is tiny! I mean 3/4″ x 1/2″ tiny!!! Wow…small is nice but so small (without grips/an edge), I could barely pull it back out of my USB slot! The shape is symmetrical, but quite comfortable to hold. I loooove the side grips, very tactile rubber texture. It does however, attract dust. The scroll wheel is very smooth, and easy to use, side clicking is nice, very little force required. I also like the two small buttons on either side of the mouse, so a total of 5 buttons, all of which are customizable if you install the included software (also downloadable online). The mouse requires 1 AA battery, very easy to open the bottom cover and slip the battery inside. There’s a tiny switch for power, and a small button to press for the portable USB connector to fit into during travels. There are 2 curved mouse strips at the bottom for gliding and it is very smooth, no problems at all on flat surfaces. Does not work on glass! With the added battery, the mouse has a good solid weight to it, so that it’s not too heavy to push around and not too light that it’ll just slide everywhere.
SECOND, THE NEGATIVES:
While I love the shiny black, it shows all kinds of fingerprints and oily touching, so you might end up wiping your mouse alot! The scroll wheel is very smooth, in fact, too smooth. No tactile feeling at all when you’re scrolling through a long page, which means you cannot tell how much you scrolled! I like the option of having endless scroll or tactile scrolls found on the current Logitech mice. The two buttons on the side of the mouse, near the thumb and ring/little finger are useful but not located in a easy to access area. For the thumb button, I have to move the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 closer inside my palm to reach and press it. That makes my hand more cramped, ergonomically unsound. I wish they made the button where the rubber indentations are on the side of the mouse, that would’ve been perfect!
I currently use a Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse (for notebooks), and that is what I’m comparing alot of the features such as buttons and scroll wheel to. I think Microsoft has done a very good job, but I am sticking with my Logitech. It has more customizable buttons, an asymmetrical shape that’s more ergonomic (personally), and a non-shiny non-dust-attracting surface.
OVERALL, good for the average user, but for a computer geek like me, I want something more!
Nice mouse but strange size
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have a tiny laptop mouse which is wired and the wire winds up inside a self-feeding coil and so is fairly unobtrusive but I wanted something wire-free and portable. So Microsoft’s Wireless Mobile Mouse seemed to be the perfect solution – no charging base, no wires and no software (unless you want to pre-program the two side buttons). The receiver dongle is tiny and actually stores in the mouse itself which is useful as I could definitely see it being lost when on the road. The new ‘bluetrack’ technology that boasts that the mouse even works on carpet does as advertised, although who has a carpeted surface to work on?
So it’s hard to fault this one – if I had one complaint then it would be the size; at roughly the same size as the average pear cut in half it’s not quite compact enough to be a laptop travel mouse and yet isn’t large enough to be able to call it full-size either. Overall I’m very happy with it though – not sure if it will last the stated 10 months on a single AA but we’ll see.
Nice features at a good price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I don’t usually pick up Microsoft mice, but as my husband and I spend a lot of time on the computer for both work and play, our mice get worn out within a few years and its hard to dish out big bucks for two new mice every couple years. The Microsoft Mobile mouse fits nicely into our setup and is very affordable given the competition. I’ll start with its most popular feature, the BlueTrack technology. Truth be told, I really did not notice a whole lot of difference from this BlueTrack mouse and my normal Logitech laser mouse. I somewhat frequently find myself with my keyboard and mouse on my lap and my laser mouse seems to track just fine, its that I’m trying to track on an uneven surface that causes the problem. Say carpet, for example. My laser mouse will track on the carpet but my issue is not that it will track, it’s trying to move the mouse accurately on thick carpet. You see what I mean? Maybe BlueTrack is slightly more accurate, but I don’t really like using a mouse on a non-smooth surface because it’s more difficult to manipulate. Therefore the feature seems somewhat useless to me. On the plus side, this “new” technology doesn’t cost you anymore than a wireless laser mouse, so it doesn’t hurt it in any way.
As for portability, this mouse has it all. I love that the receiver stores inside the mouse. That’s a first for me and I’d have a hard time living without it now. Those little receivers can get lost very easily, especially in a laptop bag that’s crammed with all kinds of other peripherals. Great idea, Microsoft! The wireless also seems very reliable. Admittedly, my favorite wireless laser mouse is being shelved because over the last 5 years that I’ve had it, it has become very finicky if it is not in direct line of sight of the receiver. As a gamer, that’s a big no no. That and having to replace batteries every few weeks is kind of a pain in the rear. I switched to a dedicated, corded gaming mouse to resolve both of those issues, but I still can’t live without my wireless when I’m working and this mouse fits the bill just fine. I can sit quite far back from my desk and still have 100% accuracy with this mouse. It’s very nice after being frustrated with my old one for so long. It also claims a 10-month battery life. We shall see about that, but I do have my fingers crossed. That’s pretty impressive for mouse battery life, though I have a feeling they estimate that based on minimal usage and mine will not last nearly as long.
I also have to mention the lefty button. I didn’t see anyone else mention this but it has a button on the left for your thumb and also one on the right so you can use it left-handed. Being left-handed, I do appreciate that more companies are trying to accommodate lefties. Although having grown up when “right is right” I became ambidextrous and I use my right hand for everything but writing. I can imagine that a lot of lefties out there will really appreciate this, however.
All in all, a very good value for the current price. It’s comfortable, smooth, easy to use with several nice features. You really can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a quality (non-gaming!) wireless mouse.
Best mouse I have ever purchased
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The 6000 series is one of the best purchases I have made for my windows 7 laptop yet. The blue optical light does make a difference. I have used the mouse on wood and marble counter top and both work as if one were to use an older laser mouse on a track pad. If your interested in purchasing a mouse look no further as this will be one of your favorite mouses ever purchased.
