The X-540 speakers use FDD2 (Frequency Directed Dual Driver) technology to produce a uniform soundfield anywhere in the room. Immerse yourself in the game using the selectable matrix mode, which automatically creates 5.1 surround sound from common 2-channel stereo sources. The compact satellites are wall-mountable, and a special clip lets you place the center channel speaker on top of most flat-panel monitors to reduce desktop clutter. Use the wired control center to control volume and bass levels or connect headphones to enjoy your games and music privately. ....read more

    Not bad, not great

Like most I read the reviews on Amazon and other sites before I make an on-line purchase. In all cases I find there is a percentage of the reviews that are always far too critical especially when you consider the price you pay for the product (the old adage – you get what you pay for). In this case however I believe the reviews were a bit too generous and I think that Logitech could have made a few simple changes to make the set more functional. For example the lack of ability to adjust the speaker height is a bigger issue than I thought. Also, the center speaker does hang on your monitor but you should be very careful if you need to move or adjust the monitor because it will fall off fairly easily (as I’ve found out on a couple of occasions).

The biggest issue though is the sound – the speakers are a little too “tinny” for my liking and every adjustment I’ve tried does not seem to compensate for it. Again, relative to the price these are not bad, I’ve certainly heard worse speakers costing around the same amount of money but I’ve also heard better.

I’ve had this system for a long time… still satisfied

I ran across this item in the “best sellers” list in Electronics while searching for something else. I am closing in on the 2 year mark after my purchase of this system. I was surprised to see a negative or so-so review on this item. My system sounds as good today as it did 2 years ago; I’ve never experienced a humm or buzz (as one reviewer puts it)& I’m guessing my neighbors would probably call the police on me if I raised the volume enough to cause distortion.

Its been a while, but I remember narrowing my choices between this system, and a much, much more expensive Bose system. Although I’m a big Bose fan (and owner of Bose products), this system sounded better to me.

Perhaps the previous reviewer should check his connections or his sound card. If there are no problems there, then maybe he has a “dud” set of speakers that should be returned.

I do have a custom built system that revolves around media (Intel DG965WH), but usually I’m running only a 2.1 audio setup. Anyway, the speakers are the most important component of an audio system, and a similar Logitech setup at my office on my laptop sounds great.

I would say they are rugged and durable (as I have moved my system around many times), and even though I’m somewhat an audiophile, they sound great. IMHO, you could double the price of this system, and still get a big bang for the money.

Next to the sound (which easily compares with my, well high dollar, home theater system)is the handy wired control. That has to be the best idea since a pocket on a shirt!!!

In summary, this system jamms!!. Good for me when I’m at the computer, not so good when I’m trying to go to bed and my kids are on the computer :-) My wife hates this setup, along with my home theater system. What better recommendation could one offer?

The Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System is great for the money.

These certainly will not compete with high end systems, but bang for the buck, these are a really good buy. The little 5(?) inch sub is not going to compete with high end bass reflex subs in either speed or bass, but then these do not sell for thousands of dollars, nor will the rest of the audio spectrum compare to really good 2, 3 or more way systems. My Ellis Audio and custom Holtz speakers with critical Q subs certainly shame them, but they also cost much more and that is for a pair, not 5 + 1. So, if you are looking for the ultimate, keep looking, but if you want a very good sub $100.00 system, look no more.

The one item that does occasionally come up short is the gain. On some inputs which have lower audio levels than they should, you may have issues getting the volume you might like out of these, but that is not really a speaker issue, on normal material you can get reasonable levels with reasonable sound quality, most often you’ll have volumes in excess of what most will feel comfortable listening to!

I have not done exhaustive research, but to the extent that I have researched it, I have found nothing as good for the money. I purchased these for television, I have the Z-5500 system on my computer, and while it does give one a little more of everything, it does not embarrass the X-540 system, it’s merely a bit better. For serious music listening, these are not what you want, but for TV or computer systems, they are just fine as well as a good buy.

This is a decent speaker system for a computer, unless you’re REALLY into hard rock or listening to your music exceptionally loud. When pushed, this system WILL distort! If you’re listening to a stereo source, the two surround speakers don’t really kick-in(with the surround button on the control pod turned “on”) until they’re cranked up , and at that point you start hearing distortion. They work great for watching movies and other sources with encoded surround sound. And, you WILL need to buy extension cords(RCA connectors)for the surrounds, unless you’re setting/mounting them on the same desk/area you’re keyboard/monitor are located. I like the convenience of the control pod, which I have setting under my 20″ widescreen monitor.

To be honest, I was hoping for something with a little more “kick”, based on the pictures, but I think I got what I paid for.
