Good value, good sound
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Logitech Speaker System Z523 is a nice, compact set of speakers that deliver big sound.
I have another set of Logitech speakers, connected to my iMac in my office. I love the sound they deliver, full and crisp. The downside of this set is the multiple speakers strung around the room required to deliver a roomful of sound.
The Z523s are an easier setup: a subwoofer plus 2 satellite speakers. The 360 degree sound is not just a market gimmick, these speakers really deliver and fill the room. I have them plugged into the wall in the living room, and have used them hooked to my ipod, or my netbook running itunes or Pandora. I have not yet hooked up the Soundblaster, or with Squeezebox because I’m still in trial mode.
Depth of sound: excellent. I’ve read some complaints about too much base, but I haven’t noticed that.
Clarity: crisp clear high notes.
Ease of use: also excellent. The inputs and outputs are clearly marked, and you can pop your ipod or notebook on in about a second.
Portability: this was a big selling point for me. Its a compact little set without a lot of cords and wires. Easy to move from room to room if you wish. Kids want bigger sound with their video games? 3 minutes and they’re off and running. Working on a project in a room not wired for sound? Grab your ipod and these speakers and listen all day. Moving into a dorm room with limited space? These won’t make you feel like you compromised.
These are not the speakers you buy when trying to reproduce concert sound. These are the speakers you buy for everyday listening and portability.
Check out the price, Amazon is running some fantastic specials. You cannot go wrong with this excellent set of compact speakers.
Very good, but needs EQ tweaking to sound their best
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I didn’t want to spend the extra coin for the z2300 set (which are amazing). When I compared the z523 to the z2300, I found the z523 has a slight dropoff in sound quality, but were still very good. The bass output is really strong. Highs are excellent. The midrange is where it’s just a bit weak, and the only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5. After listening to them for a couple of hours and using the RealTek mixer equalizing software that came with my motherboard, along with some tweaking of the positioning on my desk, I am completely satisfied with the speaker performance. The left/right desktop units are position sensitive because they have rear and front firing drivers. The good news is that this adds another possibility for adjustment.
Other pros: Speakers are a reasonable size. Controls are easy to use (power, volume, bass, line in and headphone jack all on right speaker). Subwoofer is really nice looking. RCA and DB9 cable connections, making it possible to extend the distance between the speakers and the subwoofer.
These are a great value when on sale. High quality 2.1 sound from your PC.
Good speakers for the money!!

First set of speakers didn’t work! No Sound after hooking them up.
Made a call to Logitech and sent in bad speaker and got new system and works great.
Good sound and fits around my computer.
Kudos to Logitech service center!
Real disappointing for music
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I ordered these based on the generally positive reviews and had great expectations for them. I was replacing a pair of Cyber Acoustics speakers that cost much less than these, so surely these would sound better! In my opinion, they don’t. In fact, I think they sound so bad that I was starting to wonder if I had done something wrong installing them, but it’s pretty idiot-proof. I listened to numerous favorite songs, and was unable to find a comfortable bass level using the bass control knob. It’s either waaaaay too much and rattles nearby items with the vibration, or nothing (same is true of the volume knob, by the way). The bass is not at all to my liking (and I do like bass), I suppose it may be good for explosions on games and movies and that sort of thing, but it’s horrible for music and you’d be constantly adjusting the knob for different types of music. I also found the treble very poor, and the sound generally muddied and unbalanced. I tried to like these, I really did, especially since I hate the hassle of sending things back. These are going back. I reconnected my Cyber Acoustics. They’re not great, but I like them much better than these. I may be the only one who thinks so here, but these are awful. Listen to them first before buying (and not just on explosions) and see if you agree
Easy installation for a big improvement
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We had been using some older, but still pretty good quality, Harman/Kardon speakers with our desktop computer setup, so it’s not like we were hurting for sound quality. But installation of this Logitech speaker system made for a big improvement — particularly the addition of a decent subwoofer. Both notification sounds and music played through iTunes sound much better now. The improvement over factory-model speakers, or particularly an internal speaker system, would no doubt be even more dramatic.
I was skeptical about how good sound quality could be in a system that uses a simple 35mm input jack, and of course I recognize that you get what you pay for with a system that sells for under $100. But to put it the other way, this system sells for under $100 but delivers impressive sound quality and installation no more complex than plugging in your earbuds. For a set of speakers that’s a few steps beyond basic (particularly with a subwoofer, which makes a difference), that’s not bad at all.
