Super design and good results
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Having been a user of Blue’s Snowball, I was looking forward to this microphone’s quality for Skype phone calls/chats and it did not disappoint. It’s video quality was also great. One thing I was not expecting was how well the Eyeball was designed. The rotating, folding feature protects the mic while transporting my laptop from home to office and back. The retractable camera gives me the option of using video or not during conversations (Bad hair days are not an issue).
The only downside I’ve seen: The base should have been designed to store the USB cord.
Excellent quality
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
You do get what you pay for. This microphone is a little pricey, but the audio quality is excellent. It has great range and clarity. The camera is pretty good as well although it isn’t par with the excellent audio. The camera performs better than I expected in a variety of lighting conditions despite its absolutely tiny size (from direct sunlight to only a desklight). The camera’s resolution isn’t that high, so you should expect that. I particularly like the push-button action / hardware disabling of the camera.
Most importantly, this camera / microphone combination has a single USB connector and is natively compatible with MAC (PC too). Finding native MAC compatibility can be a challenge, and that’s why I initially purchased this camera. I use it only with Skype; however, the audio quality is definitely good enough for podcasts (actually the audio from this device better than that of most podcasts I’ve heard). I’d recommend it for anything short of hifi applications.
The only negative is that I’m not too thrilled with the mounting design. Although it can perch on top of your monitor, I think it was intended to sit on your desk, which makes the microphone susceptible to vibrations and typing. You can’t win them all, eh?
Despite that, the mounting design does work, and I would buy this again in a heartbeat.
Great product
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
this has been great product.I purchased it so that my 84 year old dad could talk to his family overseas. The clarity of picture and sound is great and it’s size is great as well. to be able to pack it up and put it in my briefcase is a great plus. I would highly recommend it.
Blue Eyeball blinks
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The overarching reason to buy the Blue Eyeball web cam is that it is fully supported on both Windows and Macs; my Mac Pro is running Windows in a virtual machine configuration, and I test applications in both environments. We are implementing Microsoft’s Office Communications Server, and I needed a web cam for video conferencing; there are not many web cams with specifications supporting both OS platforms. Blue’s microphones are among the best quality, and thus one would expect the Blue Eyeball to be similarly endowed.
In use, the Blue Eyeball’s sound quality is second-to-none; the picture quality is good, able to stream a bright image even in lower-light conditions. The only flaw in the picture quality is that the camera is slow, meaning that movement causes pixelation and produces a “jerky” picture – a problem seemingly shared by many lower-priced web cams. The design quality is definitely there; it is a stunning package. However, the way the Blue Eyeball solves the different depths of video displays in order to sit on top of the display, even laptops, is, at best, described as “interesting;” perhaps more aptly as a kluge. The rubber “mat” included with the Eyeball was a complete mystery to me, in part because the instructions included only a drawing of the rubber piece without written comment. It works, but could be much better.
Overall, it does the job, and I can learn to sit still.
Fun, funky little webcam/mic combo!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I just picked this up to use with my Mac mini, and I am very pleased with it so far. The sound is excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the webcam. Other online reviews made me doubt the webcam function, but for us it is better than any we have used before. The unit is plug and play, although I had to restart my computer twice to get both video AND sound working. I love the big, bulky retro look, although my husband seemed to think it made little sense to spend all that money on something that looked like an antique! Set up was easy, and the included adapter made it very simple to adjust the webcam to fit over my Dell monitor. The salesperson at the Apple store did tell me that he was seeing some returns due to the fragility of the Eyeball and suggested I treat it with extreme care. I would recommend the Eyeball, although it is a bit pricey. It really should be more like $70, but I’ll take it anyway!
